Top 10 Unusual Resume Mistakes
Top 10 Unusual Resume Mistakes 78 Are you making these mistakes on your resume? 10) Using a cutesy email account to send the CV Any email arriving from snookums12 or bigboy69 that gets through the spam filter will get caught by the human filter before being dumped in the trash filter. Email from billgates1 is probably not going to help at Microsoft either. 9) Mentioning low grades or test scores eval If you had problems in a course, why mention it at all? You're too honest. Emphasize the positive and achievements you can be proud of. 8) Forgetting ineffective information on your CVeval â¦only to have it surprise you in the subsequent interviews, such as alternative musical tastes (which I have), esoteric hobbies (I would get asked about mixology too much) or even a past job experience unrelated for the position at hand. Every detail you leave on your CV should have a purpose or not be there. 7) Avoid sending your CV as an email attachment Don't do this unless requested specifically in a job posting. Instead, put the CV text directly into the email itself. In this age of spam and viruses, many emails are wrongly flagged as dangerous and are quarantined from their destination, taking your hard work and hopes with them. Besides, the recipient can always ask you for a different format after the fact, and will. Some people think otherwise. 6) Using friends as references This is especially funny when your friends do it also and everyone applies to the same company. You're better off keeping your references in a separate document anyway. 5) Saying why you left âDon't include reasons why you are leaving your current employer or why you may have already left,â says Tracy P. Miller of TearTaylor's Career Corner. However, be prepared for the question if it comes up in the interview and âthe pay was too low' is not a good answer even if it may be true. 4) Using non-traditional fonts or symbols This is especially relevant when applying internationally. The resume recipient's computer may not be equipped to handle these symbols, and you're overly optimistic if you think that person is going to understand why your CV looks like garbage on their screen. They'll reject you as quickly as they can confirm a file deletion (guess which). Another reason is that resume-search or -scanning software may also have a hard time deciphering this special text, rendering your CV a waste of space in a company's candidate database. 3) Writing with expressions that only made sense at a past job Only a handful of people are going to understand when I say that I could be counted on to quickly knock out hotfixes from Racine while the site was gone fishin', and unless you're applying for an internal promotion, your own cultural siblings are unlikely to be on your upcoming list of interviewers. Employers are making efforts to speak simply, and so should you. 2) Breaking the law Seriously. For example, in Canada it's illegal for an interviewer to ask about marital status, sexual orientation, race or age so save precious page space by keeping that information to yourself. 1) Lying This is so obviously a bad idea, it boggles the mind that people continue to lie on their resumes all the time. Admittedly, in my experience few companies do their homework and verify final candidates' claims on their CVs with even a single phone call to a past employer, which is perhaps the reason people keep trying. Just don't do it. Bonus Mistake 0) Leaving text for video This pseudo-cool Web2.0 trend of performing your CV on camera continues to annoy recruiters. Would you want to hire someone that you feel has wasted your time before they even walked in the door? Keep the video camera for family events and catching people doing dumb things. 5-Steps to Forgive Someone and Move On
5-Steps to Forgive Someone and Move On The following is a guest post by Divine Grace Buszka, Her bio follows. We all deserve happiness, but many of us canât seem to get to a place of pure joy. Perhaps it is because you are hanging onto anger towards someone who has wronged you. It happens to all of us. Whether itâs a co-worker, a family member or a friend â" weâve all resented someone who hurt us. It can be toxic. The longer we carry around that hurt, the more bitter, cold, cynical and closed off we become. Forgiveness is one of the toughest things you can do, but it is essential if you want to move on. Learning to forgive properly can heal deep wounds and create a happier, more peaceful life. It can also save your relationships, your social life, and even your job if you are angry at the boss. So, when you find yourself in this position, consider this: forgiveness is not for the other person, itâs for ourselves. When we forgive others, we are not saying that what they did is okay and weâre not letting them off the hook! Instead, we are giving ourselves permission to let go of the anger, resentment and all the pain they caused us. That is how we set ourselves free. That is how we create space in our lives to find peace and happiness. It changed my life. Forgiving my ex-husband helped me get over my divorce, find enlightenment and finally have the courage to write my first book, âA Little Bit of Grace, A Spiritual Memoir.â Here are 5-steps you can take to shed the hurt and resentment and forgive someone for wronging you. Locate your pain. Stop, take a deep breath, and step back from the situation. Zoom out and take a look at the bigger picture of what that person did and why it upsets you. Try to identify the emotional pains such as anger, resentment, fear or sadness. Determine the emotional block. Is there a deeper reason you are angry? Figure out why this person hurt you and do your best to determine why itâs so difficult for you to let this go. Then, try to step into the other personâs shoes. Do your best to look at the situation from their perspective without bias or judgment. What fears or insecurities of theirs might be they be projecting? Have compassion. After doing your best to learn the other person, have compassion for who they are as another flawed human. They are also trying to feel loved and be loved. A lot of people will project their own fears and insecurities towards others due to feeling unloved and this may be the root of their negative actions toward you. Surrender, forgive, and let go. Be brave and make the conscious decision to forgive and to let go. Know that when you do this, you are not only setting the other person free, you are setting yourself free. Forgiveness is for you, not for anyone else because it sets you free from hurt. When you forgive and let go, you are loving yourself enough to give yourself peace. Send the other person peace and love. Do the work to heal and grow from the experience. Remind yourself that we are all human and sometimes we make mistakes. If the other person is unwilling to grow from it, thatâs not your responsibility. Itâs not your karma. Send the other person peace and love, and then let go and move on. Forgiveness is a personal process and no one can do it for you, but you can and should do it for yourself. As you start to let go, you will find it easier to come to terms with the hurt and move on with your spiritual evolution. It guided my journey of self-awareness and self-love, which I share in my memoirs to empower others to take the first step. If you are also interested in Divine Graceâs book, it will be released on Kindle May 31 for free for three days. About the Author Divine Grace Buszka is an author, spiritual teacher and life coach. Through her San Diego practice, Divine Intuitions and website Divine Grace Today, she provides empowerment coaching and spiritual guidance to help her clients find peace, happiness and healing. Her new book, A Little Bit of Grace, A Spiritual Memoir, will be released digitally on May 31. It is a must read for anyone seeking to manifest healing, love, peace, freedom and happiness.

How to Stand Out Online According To Ryan Deiss, Founder of DigitalMarketer.com - Classy Career Girl
How to Stand Out Online According To Ryan Deiss, Founder of DigitalMarketer.com What does a teacher do in a loud classroom when she wants her students to stop talking and listen? She whispers. According to Ryan Deiss, founder and CEO of Digital Marketer and speaker at last weeks ICON, in this cacophony called the internet, your marketing and your brand should whisper in order to be heard. Its a noisy world online these days. Hard to stand out, right? His tip to you is to whisper when it is loud in order to stand out. How can your brand whisper? Over the last 36 months Ryan and his team have: Invested over $15,000,000 on marketing tests, generated tens of millions of unique visitors, sent well over a BILLION emails, and run approximately 3,000 split and multi-variant tests. Ryan is also a highly sought after speaker and consultant whose work has impacted over 200,000 businesses in 68 different countries. How to Stand Out Online According To Ryan Deiss, Founder of DigitalMarketer.com 1. Build relational equity. Visualize your customers like an empty bank account. Its ok to withdraw money if you already have money in there. Thats ok. But its theft to make a withdrawal before we make adequate deposits. They get your pitch and they go, do I know you? Have you built up enough relational equity? Every time you send an email, think about, is this making a deposit or withdrawal of relationship equity? How do you build relational equity? Make them laugh. Can you laugh at yourself? Make them cry. Or make them feel a part of something. Where is the shared experience in our customer base? Do your customers know what you believe? Someone is more likely to invest in something if they know what you believe. 2. Deliver actual value in advance. Customers dont care until you go first. You must be willing to go first. The best way to do that now is through content amplification. Advertising amplifies content. If your content is bad, advertising to it wont help. So you absolutely must have quality content. Give me a little bit of content and now Ill give you a little bit. Retargeting makes this possible if done right. Its far better for the consumer as well. Retargeting means that once you land on someones website, you are tracked and they can retarget you with a personalized ad based on the content you were reading. For example, right now I could retarget YOU with an ad about another piece of content about online marketing. You can do the same and create more personalization for your target customers which will make them happier AND will help them get their problem solved faster. And we all want to help as many people as possible, right? Ryan suggests buying advertising to content. You pay for it. Install a retargeting pixel. Then, send people to it. Be the one who answers questions and give actual value in advance. The goal is not to convert yet. Engaging costs you nothing. Start now. (Note: We agree with Ryans strategies and have written about retargeting in this Facebook advertising article, if you are interested in checking it out). BIG LESSON: The future of marketing isnt about who can get the most eyeballs the cheapest. Its about who has the most people pixeled.

It Is Attitude, Not Skills that Set You Apart
It Is Attitude, Not Skills that Set You Apart Terrence Seamons post Dead Wood, No Passion hits the mark! At a picnic with friends, a friend/hiring manager was lamenting over the lack of passionate candidates. Sure, there are lots of unemployed seekers, but he couldnt find one witha fire in their belly. So the recommendation made is to look inward and outward. How are you coming across? These are the recommendations of Terry: Positive Energy Although its a bummer to be out of a job, you cant let it drag you down. Somehow you must master your outlook. Stop holding on to the past. Let go of the banana. Remind yourself that you are still intact, that you still have your strengths. Focus on your objective. Focus on the future. Continuous Research Anyone committed to their job search nowadays has to be in continuous research mode. In other words, make sure that your feelers are out for information about whats happening in (and around) the business world. If you are not already a news junkie, become one. Stay abreast of whats going on in the fields of your greatest interest. Problem Solving The employers that you would like to work for have problems. Do you know what they are? Do you see yourself as the solution? Can you convey that to them? Lifelong Learning When an employer looks at you, do they see Miss Havesham (the Dickens character from Great Expectations), someone whose clock stopped years ago? Or do they see someone who is learning, trying new things, experimenting, and ever curious about the world? Passion Finally, lets look at passion. What is it? And how do you display it in your demeanor? Passion is strongly felt love for something, that shows up in your eyes, your face, your gestures, and your voice. You cant fake it. My friend John had that it that made him enjoyable to be around. He was positive, open to new opportunities and for the most part inquisitive. John is an engineer and was recently recruited and landed a splendid job in a far away state. It is happening! It will happen for you too!

Retirement Isnt What It Used To Be
Retirement Isnt What It Used To Be When the Social Security program was initiated in the US in 1935, the logic was to remove older workers from the workforce and make way for younger workers. But you wont want to retire! So its time you evaluate your definition of retirement. In 1935, the average life expectancy was 61 years old. Far fewer people made it to the ripe old age of 65. But today we are living longer. The CDC reports life expectancy in the US is age 78.8. The idea that youll be happy playing golf, walking the beach, or playing cards for the remainder of your life seems absurd! More importantly, most of us wont have enough money to carry us into our 90s given the costs of healthcare. If you are in the workforce, at any age, it is time for you to think about what you want to do with the last part of your career- or if you prefer, your second act. This post is part of Job Action Day. Act II: Finding Career Satisfaction After 50 Redefine Retirement Who am I to define what YOUR retirement will look like? That is up to you and I suggest you begin thinking about how you will spend your free time once you are no longer working full time, because you will have a lot of it! Some baby boomers dont want to quit working. But they do want to reprioritize their time. They probably dont want to work 50+ hours a week. So what job will they hold? Will it be a role with less responsibility meaning less pay? Or will it be a consulting or per diem role? Or will there be a new type of income stream we have yet to define today? Visualize Your Future Visualization is an effective way to begin. Visualization has been used by athletes and professionals to define what they want their future outcomes to look like. Whether you write down what your days activities will be, hour by hour, or create a vision board, the act of creating something tangible that represents your future can be very motivating. Assess Your Values What will be important to you later in life? Will you want to volunteer, travel, or spend time with family? Your life post-retirement MUST center around your core values if you want to be happy. Write down these values and share them with your partner or spouse to see how they match and where they differ. Communicating with your significant other may bring stress but it may also bring peace. Be ready for either. Focus On What You LOVE Doing Throughout your career, youve done many things. Now is the time to focus on the functions and skills you enjoy using the most! Dont waffle or waiver from what your gut tells you. Write these things down. Connect The Dots Talk to people who have retired, read about people who have created a second career. Youre going to need ideas and inspiration to help you realize that almost anything is possible. Build Your Bridge to Retirement The earlier you start thinking and planning for your future, the better. It could take time for you to build a bridge to your new career and make the transition- so dont wait until youre final year to begin the process and metamorphosis! If you are looking for more ideas and information on Act II careers, please be sure to check out Job Action Days other contributing career bloggers here.
